Magnesium is... crucial in maintaining a healthy heart beat
Magnesium plays a massive role in stimulating and regulating muscle contractions, and with the heart being the hardest working muscle in the body, deficiency in said mineral can be detrimental to heart health.
On average an adult heart beats 72 times a minute and these contractions in the cardiac muscle fibres are caused by calcium. Magnesium is calcium’s counter partner in these functions, and by relaxing the muscles prevents overstimulation - which could result in heart rhythm problems such as atrial fibrillation.
Regular heart muscle contractions are further supported by electrical impulses, and the pump that generates these, also relies on magnesium to ensure proper functioning.
